      Erik Kofman's story about being stranded Er was een korte verbinding van 35km en daarna een special van km duinen. We startten in groepen van 20 en ik startte in de 5e groep. Bij de start rustig aan gedaan om niet direct in het stof van de rest te zitten want de dag was nog lang. Alles ging lekker totdat na 13km al mijn motor ermee op hield.

      Omdat ik wist dat Onno Ellens 1 of 2 groepen achter mij zou starten pakte ik alvast mijn startkabels om de motor weer aan de gang te krijgen als hij langs zou komen. Tijdens het lossnijden van mijn kabels van de onderkant van de kroonplaat had ik uit het niets een diepe snee in mijn duim. Dat was dubbel klote want ik zag direct dat daar hechtingen aan te pas moesten komen. Maar eerst moest die motor weer aan de praat dus een zakdoekje met ductape om mijn duim.

      Alles zat toen al onder het bloed. Toen kwam Onno gelukkig langs en hebben we mijn motor gestart. Maar zodra we zijn motor loskoppelde hield die van mij er weer mee op. Dat ging dus niet werken. Toen heb ik met Onno's iritrack de organisatie gebeld die van mij deed niets meer om te zeggen dat ik de heli wilde met een doktor om te hechten.

      Wel gelijk duidelijk proberen te maken dat ik zou doorgaan want meestal nemen ze je uit de wedstrijd. Daarna is Onno ook met wat startproblemen doorgegaan. Toen het Aprilia team gebeld en daar dachten ze dat het probleem de accu was.

Daar nog aan een andere groep Chilenen gevraagd of ze mijn lege KTM accu voor een volle wilden ruilen maar opeens hadden ze alle 5 een slechte accu Weer verder maar na een km of 15 stopte de motor weer.

      Toen was ik er wel achter dat de dynamo het niet meer deed. Druk bellen met het Aprilia team en ondertussen zelf zoeken waar het probleem zou kunnen zijn. De Unimog kwam ook weer vrolijk langs en Kornelis heeft ook nog geholpen met het zoeken naar de oorzaak. We konden niets vinden en zij gingen ook weer door.

      Wat een klote gevoel. In de desert zonder schaduw en een motor die niet te maken leek. Na wat heen en weer gebel bleek dat Jos van Bergehenegouwen had kunnen regelen met weer een kennis van Chaleco Lopez dat Jelle onze monteur met een dyname in een pickup zou kijken of ze mij konden vinden. Positie S27 Liggend onder mijn jas om niet te verbranden. Af en toe gooide nog een verdwaalde vrachtwagen een flesje water uit het raam. Af en toe Jelle bellen met hoe ver hij nog moest.

      Nog maar 3 kwartier, nog maar 25 km. Maar het bleek allemaal veel langer te duren als het al zou lukken om mij te vinden. Met nog km duinen voor de boeg begon ik wel te rekenen hoelang ik nog onderweg zou zijn als mijn motor het weer zou doen.

      Hoe laat zou ik nog uiterlijk verder gaan? Wanneer had het nog zin? Wat zou ik doen als de bezemwagen zou komen en de track zou sluiten. Allemaal leuke dillema's. In de tussentijd hoorde ik wel 10x een auto aankomen die er niet was. Of zag ik auto's rijden die uiteindelijk graspollen bleken te zijn. JPG Rijden als een gek om voor donker binnen te zijn! Ging allemaal best heel lekker totdat we een lang stuk door een rivier moesten.

      Daar ging mijn schema maar daar kwam ik ook weer doorheen. Zo'n 30km voor het eind was er nog een CP en had ik nog een uurtje licht. Of ik niet beter via de weg terug naar het bivouac kon gaan? Natuurlijk niet! Ik was zover gekomen dat ik de proef wilde volbrengen. Dus weer eenzaam het laatste stuk in. Het waren wel steeds verbaasde gezichten als ik bij een CP kwam als motorrijder en dan nog zo laat. Met nog 10km voor de boeg reed ik verkeerd op een plek met heel veel sporen.

      Weer balen zo vlak bij het eind. Om niet te veel tijd te verliezen heb ik Frankrijk gebeld om te vragen om de GPS te unlocken zo krijg je alle waypoints te zien. In plaats daarvan kreeg ik koers voor 3km en kwam ik weer op de track. Vlak voor het donker kwam ik bij de finish. Wat een blijdschap! Ik heb mijn stuur bijna kromgetrokken van plezier. Bij de ingang van het bivouac wordt je GPS nog gecontroleerd.

      Na allemaal felicitaties mocht ik door. Na nog geen 10 meter stopt mijn motor weer doordat de benzine op was. Wat een geluk dat ik er was en lopend heb ik het Aprilia team bereikt. Toen ik mijn telefoon bekeek zag ik allemaal berichten met hoe klote en jammer het was dat ik er uit lag.
